Send a Flare

A story about memory

The pier and the green Vespa.

Decades ago, she had walked this same seaside pier with Mike, her first love.

Now she was back with her sister Jackie, sharing fish and chips and talking about old times.

Then a green Vespa pulled up across the road.

For one second, her heart missed a beat.

Mike?

The rider removed his helmet.

It wasn’t him.

Jackie smiled. ‘Do you remember the pillar?’

They walked down onto the sand and found the little heart they had left there all those years ago.

It was still there.

She touched the faded inscription and smiled.

‘I wonder how he’s doing. I hope he’s alright.’

Jackie looked at her.

‘Why don’t you leave him a little flare?’

A message tied to a memory, a place and a moment — left quietly in case, one day, the right person finds it.

That simple thought became Send a Flare.

A green vintage Vespa beside a weathered seaside pier
A memory, left quietly in the world.

A quieter way to reach the past.

Send a Flare gives that thought somewhere to go: a simple message tied to a memory, a place and a moment.

Here's what a flare looks like

SCHOOL

📍 Manchester, 1996–1999

Just want to say thank you to my English teacher, Mrs D. She made me believe my writing was worth something. If anyone remembers her, or was in S3 with me, I'd love to say hi.

CLUB

🏏 Cricket Club, West Yorkshire, 1988–1992

Played second XI under Coach Whitfield. Thirty-odd years later I still remember his team talks. Anyone else who turned out for us back then, I'd love to hear how you're doing.

How it works

Four gentle steps to reconnect with a shared past.

Step 1

Create a flare

Choose a category, add the group or place name, location, and the years you were there.

Step 2

Match with shared memories

If someone else flared the same school, club, neighbourhood, or trip, we’ll let you both know.

Step 3

Send a reaction

A small, friendly reaction. No pressure, no public posts, no endless feeds.

Step 4

Optionally join a private chat

Only if both people want to. Private chats are opt-in and tied to that one shared memory.

Built for calm, not chaos

Send a Flare is designed to feel safe, quiet, and entirely under your control.

No full-name search

You can’t look someone up by name. Matches only happen through shared memories.

No public profiles

There are no follower counts, public feeds, or performance metrics.

No automatic chats

Private chats are only created when both people explicitly opt in.

Opt-in only

Every connection starts with a small, mutual signal. You’re always in control.

Your personal details stay private.

We never sell your data or use your memories for ads. Flares are discoverable through shared memories so the right person can find yours, but your personal details and private chats stay between you and the people you choose.
